Raleigh, NC – May 3, 2017 – The TWAIN Working Group (TWG), a not-for-profit organization designed to provide and foster a universal public standard, today announced the immediate release of its 2.4 specification — the latest version of its royalty free open standard protocol that facilitates communication between Image Capture Applications and Image Capture Devices.  The TWAIN 2.4 specification has added technology that will allow TWAIN drivers to natively support the future TWAIN Direct™ Specification, along with new operations, capabilities and image information as part of an ongoing commitment to evolve with the industry.  In conjunction with the 2.4 release, TWAIN has rolled out a new website that promotes a better user experience for application developers, scanner manufacturers and scanner users seeking information around the TWAIN standard.  Enhanced features include a Resource section where companies can feature TWAIN related products and services, and Forums that can be accessed as a knowledge base for troubleshooting.  The new site and download of the 2.4 specification can be found at twain.org.
New features in 2.4 include information about number of images and sheets scanned, control for number of sheets scanned and added support for PDF/Raster, a new image file format developed for the future TWAIN Direct™ Specification.
“The 2.4 specification continues to build on previous versions that ensure operating system independence, an all-inclusive feature set and the ability to drive any scanner from personal to the high volume production,” says Jon Harju, Chair of the TWAIN Working Group and CTO at Visioneer Inc. “This latest release also describes optional features allowing TWAIN Classic drivers to natively support the future TWAIN Direct™ Specification.  This allows scanner manufacturers to realize some of the benefits of TWAIN Direct™ technology while taking a vital step towards seamless compatibility with the TWAIN Direct™ Bridge software for Windows, a critical component that will ease adoption when the new standard is released.”
