Contest Helps Parascript Explore Classification Market

When Parascript launched its new auto-classification technology earlier this summer, it did so with the plan of targeting a new market. Parascript sees a tremendous opportunity in e-governance—especially in the SMB. As with any new market, however, going after this space is going to require some pioneering on Parascript’s part.

Parascript has started its search for new customers by launching what it is billing as the “Ultimate Document Challenge.” “We are looking for a poster child where lack of knowledge about information has led to a lack of e-governance capabilities,” said Greg Council, VP of marketing and product management at Parascript. “We’ve gathered use cases and have engaged with some companies, so we are starting to formulate what we think the average use case for Document Classification 2.0 might be.

“We view the Ultimate Document Challenge as half promotion and half proof-of-concept. We want to see some more profiles of problems that customers are having. And we’re not talking about problems involving millions of documents. We’re talking SMB problems. We want to prove to SMBs that they can use document classification too.

“When you consider document classification and e-governance—everybody knowns there are problems. But, a lot of people are on the sidelines when it comes to utilizing technology to fix it. That’s because they either aren’t aware of a solution or believe they aren’t a good fit for what’s out there. We are putting our software where our mouth is and want to show it can work.”

The Ultimate Document Challenge is open to anyone with a document problem involving more than 100,000 documents. There is an entry form available online that should take about 15 minutes to fill out. It asks questions about information governance requirements and findability issues. It also asks about document classes and make-up.

One question asks for the applicant’s role within the company. “One of the challenges with this market is that there is often no single person watching over all e-governance requirements,” said Council. “Basically, we are looking for somebody that is actually managing documents and processes, regardless of their title. In addition, it should be somebody that can marshal resources and get approval to take on a project.”

That’s because the winner of the Ultimate Document Challenge will receive free software from Parascript. “We will also help the winner set up our software, configure it, and get everything ready to go into production,” said Council. “Afterwards, they can continue using our software for basically the cost of maintenance typically required for a perpetual license.”

Council discussed some attributes that Parascript is looking for in a potential winner. “We are looking for multiple repositories, including cloud-based EFSS services, SharePoint, and traditional document management systems,” he said. “We are also looking for a wide variety of documents—we want some place we can have a broad impact. This could mean that an SMB would likelly be favorable vs. a department in a large company.

“We really have no idea what we are going to get. Ideally more entries would be better. Twenty would probably be sufficient. We are confident that from 20 submissions we can find one that will offer the uniqueness that we are looking for.”

Deadline for entries is Nov. 6. The deadline for implementation is March 31, 2016. The winner must also be willing to participate with Parascript in promotional activities, including a press release, a case study, and a Webinar.

“We’ve had a few engagements involving Document Classification 2.0, mostly with banks,” said Council. “And we have already found novel and unique automation opportunities that we had not been aware of. The Ultimate Document Challenge should provide us with even more exposure to the needs of the market.”
